Once Upon A Time in a land not so far away (over the pond, really), the powers that be at Lush had a splendid idea! “We’d like to make something that smells of summertime and a wintery Christmas, all in one. Something that will remind people of eating gorgeous granny smith apples in the heat of summer and scrummy apple pie at Christmas-time in winter – something so nostalgic and so fresh and delicious….”. They pondered and dabbled, explored and concocted, until finally they’d added just the right amounts of their secret ingredients to produce the fairest lotion of them all! A lotion of which fairytales are made – for me anyway (don’t burst my bubble! :D) and they dubbed it, aptly I might add, Once Upon A Time (OUAT).
So what does this magical lotion smell like? Okay I guess that question is redundant 😀 but, I cannot explain to you just how delicious this appley-smelling lotion is! Have you tried Santa’s Belly Shower Jelly? It is the EXACT same scent you get when the heat of the water hits it. The smell is that of the ripest, fruitiest green apples but with the addition of grapefruit oil, sicilian lemon oil and lime oil, it smells even brighter – like sunshine in a tub, to me. Although there is no floral element in the ingredients list, the longer it stays on the skin, the more of a fruity floral note comes to the forefront – like what I’d imagine apple blossoms to smell like in Spring (cos, that’s when they bloom). I had wondered if there was a touch of honeysuckle or honey water to give it that honeyish sweetness but, nope! Lucky for all, it’s vegan! (Side note: I just realised why I LOVE this lotion so so much – on me it smells a TON like our beloved Fizzbanger Bath Bomb that has recently got the chop. Although there is no cinnamon in the lotion, it smells like cinnamon apple on my skin – I sincerely hope it’s the same for everyone who uses it because the Love scent family is incredible and its a crying shame that Fizzbanger has been discontinued. I’ll take 10 OUAT‘s! :D)
It is a very thick lotion and although it has two of my favourite moisturisers, almond oil and murumuru butter in it, it doesn’t leave you feeling greasy and takes a minute to soak in, leaving you with balmy and beautiful skin. The scent lasts all day, perfuming skin sweetly (but not sickeningly so!). I think next to Yummy Mummy Body Conditioner, Once Upon A Time Body Lotion is my most prized Lush possession.
When you first rub it on, it smells to me, of the waxiness of a granny smith apples’ skin (which I really enjoy!). However, shortly after application, it settles into the gorgeous sweet fruitiness I’ve described. If I may be so bold, I imagine this being the star product from the 2017 Christmas range – and that is saying something as I have more than a handful of fierce favourites this year!
Now, I’d like to share a little secret with you, or rather, a rumour. One I firmly believe to be true (well I flipping hope so!!). The Lush UK are hinting at 3 new exclusive solid perfumes (and body sprays. But we forget those, as we can’t import them to South Africa without paying £45 just for shipping) and will be announcing the three scents at the end of this month. Like a total creeper, I watched the video sneaky peek on their @lushkitchen insta account and listened extra carefully to what the sales consultants in the clip had to say. When it came to the third mystery scent, I heard “apples” on a few occasions. I feel I can safely say that the Once Upon A Time/ So White scent family shall be welcoming a new addition to the scent family pretty soon! YASSSSSS I cannot tell you how excited I am as I literally uttered these words when I received my first tub of Once Upon A Time Body Lotion: “A Body Spray in this scent would be EPIC!” – But, I’ll take the solid perfume for now and hope that the Body Sprays become available worldwide by Christmas next year! 😀
Now that I’ve gushed endlessly about this beauty of a lotion, I must forewarn you that stocks are quite limited in South Africa. If this scent profile sounds like something you’d enjoy, please be sure to snap up a tub (or 4 :D) soonest, before they’re all gone!
When is this available: Christmas 2017 until stocks last (In all Lush stores)
Price: R140 for the 100g tub and R265 for the 225g tub
Weight: 100g and 225g
Scent Family: So White (but I’m going to go out on a limb and say the Love scent family too)
If you love this scent family, why not layer the fragrance with the Christmas exclusive, Santa’s Belly Shower Jelly. Also look out for the release (I hope my gut is right) of the Solid Perfume at the end of this month (available in the Lush UK). If you’ll be vacationing where water restrictions aren’t a thing, why not add a Fizzbanger Bath Bomb to your bath cocktail!
